Our First Marathon: Back to Where It All Began
Lake Garda, 2024 – a place that means more to us, Willem and Jelle, than just a beautiful part of Italy. It’s where we first met years ago. And now, in 2024, we returned for something we had never done before: our very first marathon.
A New Challenge
We both felt it was time for a new challenge. Something physical. Something mental. Something you don’t just do casually – but work toward together. So we signed up for the Lake Garda marathon (and half marathon), even though we hadn’t trained super well for it.
Maybe a bit impulsive. But very us.
Working Towards One Goal
We didn’t stick to every training schedule perfectly, but we truly did this together. The long talks, comparing running shoes, laughing through the soreness, and sharing nervous excitement the day before – it all built up to one shared goal.
- Willem ran the full marathon and finished just under 5 hours.
- Jelle completed the half marathon in 2 hours and 11 minutes.
No records, but a result we’re incredibly proud of. It was tough – but it felt amazing.
A Look Behind the Scenes
The day started early. We picked up our bib numbers, which already felt like an adventure on its own. We received a goodie bag (always fun), and the atmosphere was great right away.
The sun was shining but not too strong. At 17 degrees, it was the perfect temperature to run. Everything just clicked.
And then we ran. Past the shimmering water, through charming towns and beautiful scenery. The route was stunning – like moving through a postcard. Every kilometer felt like adding a new memory to an already special story.
Proud and Grateful
We look back with a big smile. Not just because we finished – but because we did this together. In the place where it all started.
This was our first marathon, but definitely not our last challenge together.
